AI Beyond the Prototype
Requirements for the robust continuous operation of AI in the context of production
Artificial intelligence (AI) offers considerable advantages in industrial applications, including the reduction of resource consumption, better adjusted machine parameters or higher production quality. However, in the excitement of promising prototype results, it is often overlooked that the true value of AI lies in long-term operational management. However, the transition from a prototype to a fully functional solution is challenging, as the requirements for continuous operation go far beyond the capabilities of a prototype. It is therefore crucial to define the requirements for long-term deployment at an early stage in order to make the right decisions during the various development phases.
This white paper makes suggestions for this. For example, AI and business experts should work closely together to clearly formulate the shared vision of the solution and avoid misunderstandings. A structured dialog about the development goals is necessary to increase the success rate of AI initiatives. The white paper provides a framework for defining requirements that go beyond the prototype and promotes coordination between experts and decision-makers. In addition, the AI engineering initiatives of Fraunhofer IOSB and the AI Advancement Center of Fraunhofer IAO and Fraunhofer IPA support this process with technical and organizational tools to pave the way for a successful implementation of AI in industry.
